My Pool is Clear but Slimy – HOW TO GET RID OF THEM!

Spread the love

If your pool is clear but slimy then it sounds like your pool is on the verge of an algae. Slimy surfaces are just one sign. To fight off algae infestation, You need to do a SLAM – Shock Level and Maintain.

To SLAM the correct way, You MUST have the proper test kit to read the CC and FC levels as needed.

Pool is Clear but Slimy – What to Do

Here’s what you need to do:

  • Buy a cheap local phenol/OTO red test kit (yellow/red drops) ON AMAZON
  • Begin dosing it with bleach, at the rate of 8 gallons of PLAIN household bleach each evening (~15 – 20 ppm on your pool).
  • If test with OTO displays ORANGE color then you need to skip doses. Instead, dose if light orange or dark yellow result is displayed.
  • Use hardware store 31% muriatic acid to bring down your Ph LEVELS TO 7.2 – 7.6.
  • If you need to use borax – and it will help some – You need to alternate dosing 20# of borax (or 3 boxes) with acid You will need 30 boxes of borax, and about 8 gallons of muriatic acid (PLUS what you need to get the PH down first) to completely treat your pool.
  • Once you are done with the first bleach dose, BRUSH your pool (every part of it). Brush every other day after, but ONLY on days when you add bleach.
  • Buy a Taylor K2006 testkit on Amazon so you can discover what’s actually is in your pool water.
  • Don’t waste money buying any more stabilized chlorine – no dichlor, trichlor, 4-in-1 etc. Use ONLY bleach, for now.
  • You can leave your SWCG running if you have one, but you can NOT count on it to get you where you need to be. Use bleach!
  • If you are going to be gone for a week, try very hard to get to the ORANGE range (not dark orange) and BRUSH before you go.

To SLAM, do the following:

  • Check your CYA against the Chlorine/ CYA Chart with relation to recommended Pool Levels
  • As soon as you get your correct CYA, stop using the pucks and use liquid chlorine instead.

Note:

For every 10 ppm Free Chlorine (FC) added by Trichlor, it also increases Cyanuric Acid (CYA) by 6 ppm.

For every 10 ppm FC added by Dichlor, it also increases CYA by 9 ppm.

For every 10 ppm FC added by Cal-Hypo, it also increases Calcium Hardness (CH) by at least 7 ppm

  • You can buy the common chemicals from local store
  • Liquid chlorine (sodium hypochlorite or plain bleach)
  • Muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid) to lower pH and TA
  • Bicarbonate of soda to raise TA
  • Aeration will raise pH only
  • Soda ash will raise pH and TA

GOOD LUCK!!!
