How to Clean Poop in Hot Tub

Here’s what to do if someone poops in the hot tub:

  • Close the spa/hot tub to bathers
  • Next, slip on disposable gloves (BUY HERE) . It is unhealthy to touch poo with bare hands.
  • Now, grab a bucket (BUY HERE) or net (BUY HERE) and use it to scoop the poop.
  • Then drain the water from your hot tub. Ensure you drain the piping as much as possible.
  • Scrub and clean all accessible surfaces in contact with contaminated water.
  • Clean or replace filter media (SHOP FILTER MEDIA) when appropriate.
  • Refill SPA/hot tub with clean water.

Note: You should aim to reach a pH of 7.2-7.8 and free chlorine concentration of at least 3 ppm or free bromine concentration of at least 4 ppm. Ensure the PH and chlorine remain at these levels for at least 30 minutes.

  • Disinfect the bucket or net or simply toss it.

What to do If Someone Poops in the Pool

You can take extra caution in eradicating diarrhea or poop from your pool by following the process below:

  • Close your hot tub or pool to all swimmers
  • Wear disposable gloves (BUY HERE)
  • to prevent accidental poop touching
  • Use a bucket or a net to remove the poop from the water

Note: Avoid the temptation of using vacuum on the pool as that will just break it and spread it around.

  • Talk to young kids educating them on what to and what not to do in the pool.
  • Have bathroom breaks every half hour or so to see if anyone wants to go.
  • Avoid letting your pets especially dogs and birds in the hot tub or pool area.
  • Ensure babies diapers are frequently changed so there’s no chance of anything leaking out.
  • No person with diarrhea should be allowed to swim in the hot tub or pool.
  • Teach the kids not to swallow the pool water
  • Every swimmer should rinse off in a shower before and after they swim.
